A media outlet tied to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has openly declared that Tehran has “no choice” but to develop an atomic bomb to secure “peace and calm,” directly contradicting the regime’s recent commitments.
This brazen statement, published Sunday by Fars News, exposes the hollowness of Iran’s diplomatic overtures. While Iranian officials signed a memorandum pledging no nuclear weapons and renewed IAEA access, hardliners within the regime continue to push an aggressive path that endangers the entire region.
The article, titled “No choice but to build the atomic bomb,” argues Iran must negotiate from strength, drawing a parallel to China’s nuclear development before engaging the United States in the 1970s. It claims nuclear deterrence would allow Iran to balance power against America and Israel, keeping conflicts “controllable.” Such rhetoric reveals the regime’s true priorities: not peace, but dominance through terror and blackmail.
Under the recent agreement, Iran committed to allowing International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors back into its facilities after suspending oversight last year. The deal also explicitly forbade weapon development, with the U.S. demanding a 20-year halt to enrichment activities. Yet the IRGC mouthpiece dismisses these obligations, insisting atomic weapons are essential for national security and regional stability.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei echoed similar defiance, defending the regime’s “right to legitimate self-defence” while accusing Gulf neighbors of aggression. This comes even as enriched uranium stocks remain unaccounted for and access to sites previously struck by U.S. forces in 2025 is still restricted.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi has rightly stressed that intentions alone are insufficient. Verification and transparency are non-negotiable, especially given Iran’s history of deception. The regime’s pattern of evasion, enrichment beyond civilian needs, and support for proxy militias across the Middle East underscores a fundamental truth: agreements with the mullahs are worth little without ironclad enforcement and maximum pressure.
