In that same breath, she invoked her work on legislation that made lynching a federal crime, hoping to underline her commitment to addressing racial injustices.
“People did not want to deal and accept and most importantly admit that we are the scene of a crime when it comes to what we did with slavery and Jim Crow and institutionalized racism in this country, and we have to be honest about that,” Harris said, pushing her narrative of America grappling with its past.
This insistence on honesty, however, rings hollow for many who view it as a selective perspective that ignores the complexities of history.
“If we are not honest, we are not going to deal with the vestiges of all of that harm, and we are not going to correct course, and we are not going to be true to our values and morals,” she added, further asserting her stance.
Moreover, her comments on Indigenous Peoples’ Day suggest an ongoing effort to undermine recognition of Columbus, a federal holiday that celebrates the explorer’s arrival in the Americas in 1492.
“Similarly, when it comes to indigenous Americans, the indigenous people, there is a lot of work that we still have to do, and I appreciate and applaud your point and your effort, and count me in on support,” she said, showcasing her inclination towards the modern progressive agenda.
The backlash against Columbus Day isn’t new; activists have rallied against it, claiming it represents colonialism and genocide, a sentiment that has gained traction.
“Since 1934, every October the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers who first landed on the shores of the Americas,” Harris mentioned, but she was quick to highlight a different narrative.
“But that is not the whole story. That has never been the whole story,” she stated, suggesting an attempt to rewrite history to suit contemporary agendas.
In a climate where Columbus statues have been vandalized and removed, Harris’ claims raise questions about the broader implications of her stance.
“Those explorers ushered in a wave of devastation for tribal nations – perpetrating violence, stealing land, and spreading disease,” she asserted, painting a bleak picture of history that many find excessively one-sided. “We must not shy away from this shameful past, and we must shed light on it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on native communities today.”
