(Substack)—Ukraine’s parliament is set to extend martial law for another 90 days next week, according to MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, who noted that this makes presidential elections in the near future unlikely. President Vladimir Zelensky’s term ended in May 2024, but he has declined to hold elections, citing martial law, leading the Kremlin to label him illegitimate.
In a YouTube video on Saturday, Zheleznyak addressed speculation about the Verkhovna Rada extending martial law, especially amid rumors of a potential ceasefire with Russia or upcoming elections. He confirmed the extension will likely occur between April 15-18, starting May 9 and lasting until August 6, as the 90-day period begins from the end of the previous extension, not the ratification date.
“Yes, [martial law and the general mobilization] will be extended, and this will happen pretty soon: April 15-18,” the lawmaker from the Holos (Voice) party alleged.
Zheleznyak highlighted that ending martial law on August 6 and holding elections by August 24 is unfeasible, as Ukrainian law requires 60 days for parliamentary and 90 days for presidential election preparations.
Parliament Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk also indicated that lawmakers will almost certainly extend martial law before its May 9 expiration, while emphasizing Ukraine’s dedication to democratic elections, per Reuters. David Arakhamia, head of Zelensky’s Servant of the People party in parliament, refuted claims of a snap election to outmaneuver the opposition, stating that all parliamentary groups agree elections should occur six months after martial law ends.
Ukraine’s parliament will renew martial law for another 90 days next week, effectively delaying national elections for the remainder of the summer and extending President Vladimir Zelensky’s tenure beyond his constitutional term. https://t.co/ayJPPhPnss

Since the conflict with Russia escalated in February 2022, Ukraine has enforced martial law and general mobilization, prohibiting men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country. These measures have been repeatedly extended.
Amid corruption and draft evasion issues, the government lowered the conscription age to 25 last year and imposed harsher penalties for dodging the draft or deserting. Facing troop shortages, Ukrainian enlistment officers have resorted to aggressive tactics, detaining men in public—often with violence—and sending them directly to enlistment centers, as seen in numerous online videos.

and when Russia’s conscription age is 18…crickets. When Russia sent their goon squads to chase down people evading the draft over two years ago…crickets. Putin and Russia always getting the pass from these so called conservative outlets because it’s just so much more “fun” to attack fledgling democracies and Alinsky their leadership. Cretins all with a narrative and nary an independent thought from their brain.
That’s a great way of getting American support. Consider this: the West has contributed over $300 billion to Ukraine in the past 3 years. The net result is that Russia still controls Crimea, Russia now controls all of the Donbas, Russia is close to totally wiping out Ukrainian troops in Kursk and Russia continue to slowly advance on all fronts. From that you would have to conclude that continuing what has happened for the past 3 years will waste another $300 billion and by then Russia will occupy all of Ukraine. Zelensky and all Ukrainians know this and so do you. So what do you and the Ukrainians really want/need to have any chance of turning back the Russians? European, U.S. or NATO boots on the ground. That will almost certainly trigger WWIII even if nukes don’t fly. The U.S., and by extension NATO, will not do this as long as Trump is in power and the conflict will be over if you try to wait out Trump’s term in office. This situation should have never happened and Ukraine is now in an extremely difficult spot and has no choice but to work with the U.S. to end it. Ukraine will likely not get back Crimea or much of the Donbas, if any. That’s the cold hard truth.
are the people in ukraine so cowed that they cannot resist? they fear physically dragging the clown out to the public square?
